Can a Virginia business show the price of a product and the service to install it separately?

Last updated October 31, 2026 · Last verified October 31, 2026 against the official sources linked below · General information, not legal advice

Quick answer

Yes. Va. Code 59.1-608(A) lets a supplier that provides both a good and a service display the total price of the good separately from the total price or rate charged for the service. Each figure must still include every mandatory fee or surcharge. Government taxes and reasonable shipping can be left out (59.1-607), and discounts or waived fees are allowed (59.1-609(A)).

Does a "disposal fee" on the installation need to be in the installation price?

If every customer who buys the installation must pay it, it is a mandatory fee for that service (59.1-607), so include it in the installation total.

Can I quote the service as an hourly rate?

The text allows "the total price or rate charged for providing the service". If the final total depends on time or options, the price-variable rules in 59.1-608(D) also apply.

Is there a fine?

Violations are prohibited practices under the Virginia Consumer Protection Act (59.1-610); willful violations carry up to $2,500 each (59.1-206(A)).
