Last updated October 18, 2026 · Last verified October 18, 2026 against the official sources linked below · General information, not legal advice

Quick answer

Up to $5,000 per willful violation. Connecticut's auto-renewal and continuous-service rules (C.G.S. 42-158ff, as amended by P.A. 25-44) are enforced as unfair trade practices under CUTPA. For a willful CUTPA violation the Attorney General can seek a civil penalty of not more than $5,000 for each violation (C.G.S. 42-110o(b)). Violating a temporary restraining order or injunction can cost up to $25,000 per violation (42-110o(a)). The click-to-cancel duties apply from July 1, 2026.

FAQ

Does every mistake cost $5,000?

No. The $5,000 civil penalty in 42-110o(b) applies when the court finds a willful CUTPA violation in an Attorney General action.

What must a Connecticut business offer for cancel?

A clear online cancel link or button, a replyable email address, and/or a phone number, plus handling of cancel voicemails within one business day (42-158ff).

Is there also a private CUTPA suit?

CUTPA allows private actions for actual damages and possible punitive damages and attorney fees; the $5,000 figure is the AG civil penalty, not a private statutory minimum.
